Updated: Aug 15, 2020

Ascharya-vat pasyati kascid

enam Ascharya-vad vadati tathaiva chanyah Ascharya-vac chainam anyah srnoti Srutvapy enam veda na chaiva kascit 2.29

One sees This (Self) as a Wonder;

Another speaks of This as a Wonder;

Another hears of This as a Wonder;

Yet, having heard, none understands This at all!

Krishna is talking about the glory of Atma Jnana as ascharya- wonderment, a miracle not surprise or curiosity of apara vidya

Kaschid enam Ascaryavat Pasyati (someone sees this as wonder)– All along we have missed the opportunity to discover peace happiness and security. We seek permanent peace in this outer ephemeral world which is a wonder. Few realize Happiness as “oneself” and wonder this as the greatest fact and how he missed this fact all along. He wonders how millions of people are seeking something else when this is the main thing. In fact, there should be many schools and universities teaching this. Krishna must be wondering how Drona taught everything else and missed this to Arjuna

Ascaryavat Vadati Tatha eva Anya (wonder how someone speaks of this)-one wonders how the realized talk about this even when this is beyond talking. It is like one who has tasted sugar is teaching another person who has never tasted or not ready to taste sugar how it tastes. Still how gurus like Krishna, Buddha have managed to convey. So the teacher is a wonder, having heard, none understands This at all!. How Teacher manages to convey is a Wonder

Ascaryavat ca enam anya srnoti – it is a wonder how someone manages to listen to the unspoken. One seeker came to Buddha with many questions. Buddha asked whether he has asked this to many to which he said yes. Buddha asks " did you get an answer". He answers NO. Buddha asks "have you wondered if you have not got this knowledge by asking and discussing till now, will you ever get by asking?." He says "I never thought of this". Buddha says " don’t ask any questions now stay here for one year and I then I will answer any questions you ask". He agrees. After one year Buddha says to ask any question now. The seeker says "forget it I don’t want to ask". Buddha asks why? he says" if you have answered one year ago, probably it would have been untrue. Now I realized it is not got by asking but by being here". It is realized by Listening to Guru and deep contemplation of his words, not by mere superficial understanding shruno means Shravanam - Shruptapyenam veda na chaiva kasjit- listening but beyond understanding as Atma is beyond objectification.

Guru just points out or indicates the moon or the other bank- so it is a wonder how few manage to get it and manage to cross the river risking everything is a wonder. So even a student is a wonder

Shruptapyenam veda na chaiva kasjit- listening but beyond understanding. Swami Chinmayananda is credited with bringing this knowledge to general people down the Ganges. When he told about his intention, one of the Seers objected saying how can you reveal this Great secret to everyone? Swamiji said, “don’t worry even after telling, it will remain a secret”.
