    karmaṇyakarma yaḥ paśyēd

    akarmaṇi ca karma yaḥ |

    sa buddhimān manuṣyēṣu

    sa yuktaḥ kṛtsnakarmakṛt

    saḥ yaḥ paśyet

He who sees, akarma actionlessness (of the self), karmāṇi in the action(of the body), ca yaḥ (potential) action, and he who (sees), karma akarmaṇi in the inaction (of the body ), buddhimān is wise, manuṣyeṣu among men, saḥ yuktaḥ he is a Yōgi, kṛtsnakarmakṛt who has accomplished everything

He who sees actionlessness (of the Self) in the action (of the body) and he who (sees potential) action in inaction (of the body) is wise among men. He is Yōgi who has accomplished everything

•Actionlessness in Action-Karmani akarma yah pasyed, Atma is actionless but the anatma is in action.

•Action in Actionless- Akarmani ca Karmani

•Atma is actionless, the anatma appears to be actionless at external level but potential actions are available in seed form.

•Sa Bhudhiman Has understood the higher self

•Sa Yukta Knowledge of higher self has made him the master of the anatma

•Sa Krtsna- Karma-Krt He is an accomplished person

    The Buddha Said

MY DOCTRINE IS TO THINK THE THOUGHT THAT IS UNTHINKABLE- Manasa

TO PRACTISE THE DEED THAT IS NOT DOING- Kaya

TO SPEAK THE SPEECH THAT IS INEXPRESSIBLE- Vacha

AND TO BE TRAINED IN THE DISCIPLINE WHICH IS BEYOND DISCIPLINE

    Inaction in Action

Karma Yoga is skill in Action- Inaction in Action

    buddhiyukto jahātī ’ha

    ubhe sukṛtaduṣkṛte

    tasmād yogāya yujyasva

yogaḥ karmasu kauśalam 2.50 To convert a binding karma into a liberating karma.

The Law of Least Effort- Sahaja

    •Nature functions with effortless ease

•Grass grows, fish swim, birds fly

•Flowers bloom, earth spins, sun shines

•Vedic Science – do less, achieve more

This wisdom is called jñāna-karma- sannyāsa - Facilitator.

    •We have 2 parts – anātmā & Ātmā.

    • Ātmā cannot do any action.

    •Action involves movement

•Ātmā is all pervading, it cannot move. …Like space.

•Āt is always free from karma

    Verse 4.19

He whose actions are all free from desires and fancies and whose actions are burnt by the fire of knowledge – sages call him wise

    yasya sarvē samārambhāḥ kāmasaṅkalpavarjitāḥ|

    jñānāgnidagdhakarmāṇaṃ tamāhuḥ paṇḍitaṃ budhāḥ || 4.19 ||

•This verse discusses about - Once ज्ञानी has discovered पूर्णत्वं Will there be any motivation to do any work?

•General misconception is that discontentment alone leads to work and accomplishment

•Truth is that, True Service comes only when there is fullness

•Compassion is the intrinsic nature of ज्ञानी like the heat and light from sun

•Mother’s compassion for child gets crystalized into appropriate action,

similarly ‘ज्ञानी’ is as active as an ‘अज्ञानी’ according to the needs of the society

Selfless love of mother for her child, similarly Jnani’s love for the world

•ज्ञानी is firmly rooted in self acceptance and expresses as world acceptance

•ज्ञानी firmly abides in the higher state of paramarthika, पूर्णत्वं, he does not mix with lower level of vyavaharika state

•काम संकल्प वरजीता - has no crystalized ahankaara, so no selfish desires are born out of it.

•ज्ञान दग्ध कर्मणि – no aagaami karma as no karta, hence no

    papa- punyam are generated

•Roasted seed cannot sprout, so too ज्ञानी burns karmas with the fire of knowledge

•Such people are called पंडिता, endowed with self knowledge by the wise

    yasyasarvēsamārambhāḥ kāmasaṅkalpavarjitāḥ|

    jñānāgnidagdhakarmāṇaṃ tamāhuḥ paṇḍitaṃ budhāḥ 4.19

•समारम्भा सर्वे samārambhā sarve actions are all,

•कामसङ्कल्पवर्जिताः kāma saṅkalpa varjitāḥ free from desires and fancies,

•ज्ञानग्निदग्धकर्माणम् jñānagni dagdha karmāṇam and whose actions are burnt by the fire of knowledge

World dependency > God dependency > Self dependency

BENEFITS OF KARMA YOGA AND GLIMPSE OF JNANA YOGA (3.18)

naiva tasya kṛitenārtho nākṛiteneha kaśhchana na chāsya sarva-bhūteṣhu kaśhchid artha-vyapāśhrayaḥ

•(he does not depend on anyone in the creation)

    Nothing to do

    No where to go

“Atmanam che Vijaniyat Ayam Asmiti Purushaha

Kimichan Kasya Kamaya Shariram Anusandha Yate”

    Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 4.4.12)

If one has realised one’s own Self then for what purpose, with what intention will a person run after things in the world, and why should one take birth into this body?

    yasyasarvēsamārambhāḥ kāmasaṅkalpavarjitāḥ|

    jñānāgnidagdhakarmāṇaṃ tamāhuḥ paṇḍitaṃ budhāḥ

•True service is possible when a person is contented as he has no selfish motive.

    • Jñāni, out of compassion works for the good of the society.

    • Jñāni’s is like a roasted seed.

•For roasting the ahaṃkāra, you require jñāna-agni – the fire of wisdom.

brahmārpaṇaṁ brahma havir brahmāgnau brahmaṇā hutam

    brahmaiva tena gantavyaṁ brahmakarmasamādhinā 4.24

Level 1: I am the consciousness or brahma. Consciousness is separate from body mind complex. Consciousness is Sathya and every thing else around you is mithya.

Level 2: I the consciousness principle is the same in all the body mind complex. Therefore, there is only one consciousness enclosed in all bodies. In the eye of consciousness we all one or atma ekatvam.

Level 3: The final level of upanishadic teaching is ‘I’ which is the consciousness behind all bodies and mind is alone the ultimate truth, and the essence of creation.

    SIX COMPONENTS OF A YAJÑA

    Therefore, to conclude:

Brahman is the oblation, Brahman is the offering, the fire is brahman, the one who offers the oblation is also brahman.

One whose actions happen while absorbed in Brahman, he alone attains Brahman

    brahmārpaṇaṁ brahma havirbrahmāgnaubrahmaṇāhutam |

    brahmaivatēnagantavyaṁ brahma karma samādhinā ||4.24||

From “I have Consciousness” to “I am Consciousness”.

There is no matter other than Consciousness.

    (sarvatra-eka-ātma-darśanam).

brahma eva tena gantavyam Brahman alone is to be reached,

    ब्रह्मकर्मसमाधिना brahmakarmasamādhinā

who sees Brahman in every action

    Verse 4.34

    tadviddhipraṇipātēnaparipraśnēnasēvayā|

    upadēkṣyantitējñānaṁjñāninastattvadarśinaḥ || 4.34||

    GURU

Lord Krishna says, we should approach a guru who has 2 key qualities:

One, he should be a “Tatvadarshinaha”

    Second, he should be “Jnaaninaha”

Both these qualities are essential and complementary

    SHISHYA

A seeker should be humble- humble enough to accept his ignorance

Jignasu- Thirst for the enquiry for acquiring knowledge

Sevaya – Service to the guru

    tadviddhipraṇipātēnaparipraśnēnasēvayā|

    upadēkṣyantitējñānaṁjñāninastattvadarśinaḥ || 4.34||

•To pursue jñāna-yajña we need the śāstras and the guru

•Scriptures are like mirrors that help one understand the Self

•The guru teaches one how to properly use the mirror

•A guru has to possess both knowledge and communication skills

•A student should have intense desire for knowledge and humility

    Verse 4.37

Take aways - Sarva Karma Nivritti

    Krishna Assures Arjuna

    •Destruction of all Karmas

    •Sanchita Karma

    •Prarabdha karma

    •Aagaami Karma

    •Destruction of PaapaPunya

    yathaidhāṁsisamiddhō'gnirbhasmasātkurutē'rjuna|

    jñānāgniḥ sarvakarmāṇibhasmasātkurutētathā||4.37||

•ज्ञानाग्निः jñānāgniḥ the fire of Knowledge,

    •कुरुते kurute reduces,

    • sarvakarmāṇi bhasmasāt सर्वकर्माणि भस्मसात् all karmas to ashes,

    •yathā samiddhaḥ agniḥ यथा समिद्धः अग्निः well kindled fire

•edhāṃśi bhasmasāt एधांशि भस्मसात् the fuel to ashes.

•A jñāni experiences prārabdha karma .

•However, the knowledge insulates the jñāni .

•Knowledge is like a huge blazing fire that burns everything

•It destroys all karmas both papa and punya
